How do I know if my child is learning enough, even if we do not use formal tests?

The most reliable indicator is whether your child can explain a concept in their own words to someone who does not already know it. Narration — asking a child to retell what they read, watched, or practiced — works across every subject and every age. If the narration is thin, incomplete, or confused, that is useful information. If it is detailed and accurate, that is also useful information.

My child was ahead of their grade level when we started homeschooling. Now I am worried they have fallen behind. What should I do?

Grade-level comparisons are calibrated for classroom cohorts, not for individual children learning at home. A child who has been working in depth on a subject may score lower on a grade-level benchmark than a classroom peer who has covered more surface area — and may understand the material far better.
